Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery Types

Types of Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery

Working to Improve Your Quality of Life

If your doctor recommends spinal surgery to treat your back pain, you may feel scared or concerned. Surgery is generally an invasive process that involves long and painful recovery times. However, not all spinal surgeries are this way. Orthopedic surgeons are capable of performing a variety of minimally invasive spinal surgeries to treat many conditions and injuries that cause back pain. The goal of minimally invasive procedures is to treat your pain without using large incisions that are painful during recovery. Reducing the incision size also improves your recovery time and reduces risks of complications like blood loss and infection.

Different Types of Minimally Invasive Spinal Surgery

At iRISE Spine and Joint, our surgeons will examine your condition and determine if you’re a good candidate for one of the many minimally invasive spinal surgeries we can perform.

Some of the most frequently performed minimally invasive spinal surgeries include:

  • Microendoscopic discectomy: The goal of this procedure is to remove a portion of a herniated disc, which can reduce pressure off the spine. The surgery uses an endoscopic tube with a camera attached to it. This provides the surgeon with a view of the operation without needing to create a large incision to open the site. The surgical instruments used in the procedure are small enough to fit through this tube.
  • Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF): If a disc in your lower back is damaged badly enough, your surgeon may use TLIF to remove it and fuse the surrounding vertebrae together. This reduces pressure off the nerves in the spine and improves the structure of the vertebrae. The advantage of TLIF is it approaches the spine from the side, reducing the need to cut through muscles and soft tissue.
  • Percutaneous image-guided lumbar decompression (PILD): Spinal stenosis can cause the spinal canal to narrow and put pressure on the spine. Surgeons can reduce this pressure in the spinal canal by using PILD, which doesn’t involve any incisions at all. It is performed using a small needle.
  • Facet joint ablation: Surgeons can use a small needle to deliver a controlled burst of electricity to the nerve endings in a damaged facet joint. This cuts off the pain signals caused by conditions like arthritis in the spine.
