Cervical Disc Replacement Surgery
Providing Options for Chronic Neck Pain
Pain in the neck is an occasional part of life we all experience. Usually, pain in the neck is minor from a strain that comes from poor posture or overexertion. However, neck pain may also be the result of a condition or injury in the spine.
Herniated discs and degenerative disc disease (DDD) are conditions that damage the discs between the vertebrae in your spine. These discs are supposed to cushion the vertebrae. When one or more of them is damaged, they put pressure on the nerves in the spine and can cause friction to develop between the vertebrae.
If one of the discs in your cervical spine (the neck) is damaged, then you may benefit from artificial cervical disc replacement.

What Is Artificial Cervical Disc Replacement?
The goal of artificial cervical disc replacement is to remove the damaged disc from the spine and replace it with an artificial one. This can reduce pressure on the nerves and restore lost range of motion.
Surgeons perform artificial cervical disc replacement through a small incision in the front of the neck. This reduces the impact of the surgery by avoiding unnecessary cutting through muscles and soft tissue in the back of the neck. Because of this, most patients who undergo artificial cervical disc replacement are able to leave the hospital after a night or two.
Who Needs Artificial Cervical Disc Replacement?
There are a few different surgical methods for treating herniated discs and DDD. If multiple discs are damaged, fusion may be necessary.
However, if you meet the following criteria, you may be a good candidate for artificial cervical disc replacement instead:
- Only one disc in the cervical spine is damaged
- You have no signs of arthritis, osteoporosis, or infection
- You are not allergic to surgical steel
- Doctors have tried conservative treatments like mediation or physical therapy and they’re not working
Our surgeons at iRISE Spine and Joint will examine your neck pain and determine if artificial cervical disc replacement is the right treatment.
