Hip Arthroplasty Surgery
Total Hip Joint Replacement
When one or both of your hips are in pain, it’s challenging to walk, run, dance, or even stand up. Occasional sore hips usually recover after a few days of rest, but serious hip pain may require professional healthcare treatment. One treatment for hip pain that thousands of Americans choose every year is total hip replacement surgery. Our hip arthroplasty experts can help you determine if this is the right course for your needs.

What Conditions Are Treated with Total Hip Replacement?
People with hip pain can benefit from noninvasive treatments like physical therapy, chiropractic care, or medication. However, if the pain persists, grows worse, severely impacts your ability to walk, or disrupts your sleep, hip replacement surgery may be necessary.
Conditions that commonly cause this kind of pain include:
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Fractures
- Osteonecrosis
Different Types of Total Hip Replacement Surgery
Generally, there are two approaches to replacing the hip joint:
- Posterior hip replacement: This is the traditional type of total hip replacement surgery. The surgeon approaches the hip bone through the side and back of the hip. This provides the surgeon with an open visual of the operation, which helps reduce the risk of complications from a lack of visual.
- Anterior hip replacement: Approaching the hip joint from the front is a more minimally invasive procedure because it does not involve any cutting through muscles or soft tissue like in posterior hip replacement. This procedure requires a lot of skill since the surgeon has less of a visual of the hip. Skilled surgeons with years of training and experience can safely perform anterior hip replacement surgeries with minimal risk of complications.
When you visit a surgeon for total hip replacement surgery, he or she will examine your condition to determine which type of surgery is right for you. Even if the surgeon has the skills for it, you may not be a good candidate for anterior hip replacement surgery due to factors like age or weight.
