Interventional Procedures for Pain Relief

People with severe and long-lasting back pain often need to visit medical professionals, such as ours at iRISE Spine and Joint, for treatment. There are different ways to treat back pain. Sometimes, medication or physical therapy is all that is necessary. Others may need surgery.

Plenty need more than what physical therapy or medication can offer, but may not be in a position where surgery is necessary. In these cases, they may benefit from interventional procedures.

To speak to our medical team and find out which of our back pain treatments may be right for you, call us at (888) 966-9750.

What Do Interventional Procedures Treat?

Interventional procedures are used to treat back pain and reduce the severity of symptoms. These procedures are minimally invasive. Many do not use much more than needles to access the spine. Others require only small incisions.

Interventional procedures can be used for many types of back pain, including:

  • Long-lasting back pain
  • Herniated discs
  • Degenerative disc disease (DDD)
  • Compression fractures

What Are the Different Types of Interventional Procedures?

Depending on the cause and severity of your pain, doctors may use one of or a combination of these interventional procedures:

  • Epidural injections: Our team can inject steroids into your spine to reduce inflammation. This can help lower pain and improve your range of motion for a long period of time.
  • Trigger point injections: The muscles surrounding your spine are prone to painful knots that can affect your spine. Our team can inject a small dose of corticosteroids into these trigger points to help them recede, which reduces pain in the back.
  • Medial branch blocks: A branch block is an injection of an anesthetic in the nerve endings of inflamed facet joints. This helps determine if facet joints are the source of your pain and can open the door to more long-term solutions.
  • Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty: You may need kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty if vertebral fractures are the source of your back pain. Kyphoplasty widens the gap of the fracture with a tiny balloon inflated at the end of a needle inserted into the vertebrae. Then, vertebroplasty is used to apply bone cement in this gap to essentially glue the bone back together.
