In 2012, the Florida Legislative branch passed the Personal Injury Protection (PIP) statute. Because of Florida PIP, all drivers have insurance coverage which entitles them to have 80 percent of their medical expenses paid, up to $10,000. It also covers other things like lost wages and death benefits. This statute only applies to people who have sought treatment within 14 days of the automobile accident. If one does not seek medical treatment within the 14 days, they have forfeited their PIP coverage. This means that if certain symptoms do not surface within the two week period, they will not be covered.

Understanding PIP to Know When You Qualify for EMC Coverage
The PIP statute outlines an EMC as an injury with one or more of these three conditions:
- Serious threat to the health of the patient
- Serious impairment to functions in the body
- Serious dysfunction of any organ or body part
These conditions are a little vague, so many people are confused about when it’s okay to make an EMC claim. Insurance companies will deny your claim for EMC coverage if some specific actions do not take place. Talk to your doctor who’s treating your injuries from an automobile accident. Ask him or her if your injuries qualify as an EMC and make sure they remember to include the term “emergency medical condition” in your medical report for you to show your insurance provider.
