Orthopedic Surgery for Knee Pain

When your knee is in pain and you’re unable to move it, you may need to see a medical professional for treatment. The occasional sore knee is a normal part of life, but this kind of pain is too serious to ignore. Not receiving treatment can lead to further pain and permanent disability.

The exact treatment you receive for knee pain will depend on the cause and severity of the pain. Some people can treat their pain with physical therapy. In other cases, orthopedic surgery is necessary.

Frequently performed types of orthopedic knee surgery

Orthopedic surgeons are skilled in a variety of operations for reducing pain in the knee and restoring its range of motion. Some of the most frequently performed types of knee surgery include:

  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction — A torn ACL limits the range of motion and function of the knee. Many people can still walk or run with a torn ACL, but those who need full use of the knee, like athletes, will need reconstruction surgery.

ACL reconstruction uses a graft material to reconnect the ACL. This graft may come from tendon tissue in your own body or be donated from a cadaver.
  • Torn meniscus repair — The meniscus is the layer of cartilage separating the shinbone from the thigh bone in the knee. Twisting or bending the knee in the wrong direction can force the meniscus to tear.

Orthopedic surgeons can usually repair a torn meniscus using minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques. However, if the meniscus is severely damaged, a total meniscus replacement may be necessary.
  • Lateral release — If the kneecap is out of alignment, there can be a pain in your knee and it may be difficult to bend your leg. One way to correct the alignment of the knee is with lateral release surgery.

In lateral release surgery, the surgeon loosens the ligaments around the knee cap to keep them from pulling it out of position. This is usually minimally invasive surgery performed with arthroscopic techniques.
  • Total knee replacement — Some injuries and conditions damage the knee so badly that the best option is to completely replace the knee with an artificial joint. This is usually necessary as a result of arthritis, severe fractures, or osteoporosis.
